The National Washing Line Arts Group
For Info on Wear A Peg Wednesday scroll to the bottom of this page.
NEW! The new Forums are at the bottom of this page. Please get involved :)
This is an artists and crafters group dedicated to unknown artists, new artists and other visual artists and crafters who have struggled to get their art out there!
For artists who are financially limited to hire space for the purpose of exhibiting their work. For artists who want to do their own thing. For artists who cannot find that special niche for their work in a gallery or an exhibition. But most of all, for artists who do not have the finances to frame their art.
We all know a friend or neighbour who is a fantastic artist but that friend or neighbour does not know how to get their art out there....they may be shy, or very likely, underestimate their talent or simply cannot afford the expense of framing their artworks.
Trying to get a gallery to show your work is a nightmare and some do not want risk showing work by a new artist.
It is time to show off! It is time to get your work out there for FREE or for next to no cost at all!
It costs nothing accept a few pegs and a washing line to hang your artwork, a computer and ink to make your own posters and leaflets and your own personal time to invite local unknown artists to share your washing line with their work too!.
We can start a new revolution and get more art out there, get more people who have never had a previous interest in art to come along and see what is actually happening in their own neighbourhoods, and maybe they will be pleasantly suprised by what they see and experience at your exhibition!
Let us see your washing line exhibitions, get your local communities involved and be amazed at the talent hidden in your own neighbourhood.
Costs
Washing lines or rotary lines
Most of us already have a washing line or a rotary washing line. So no cost there but, it is a good idea to buy an extra washing line for other artists to hang their work too. Cost approx £1.99p
Pegs
Well, pegs are as cheap as chips. I got 100 brightly coloured pegs on Ebay for £2.99p
Butchers hooks,
Art can be hung on trees and bushes with butchers hooks, curtain/drape hooks or even nails. I have some block canvas art and a few framed peices which I hang on bushes and trees with butchers hooks or directly onto branches. Cost approx £3.99p
Blu-tack
Tack might be needed to attach your details on card to each artwork. Cost approx £1.50p
Coloured card
Or plain white card cut up into postcard sizes. Write your artwork title, artwork size, medium, your name and price of artwork.Attach the cards to yor artwork with the Blu-Tack. Purchased cheaply from my local discount store £1.00p
Visitors book
I picked up a lovely black leather-look visitors book from Ebay for £2.99p.
Stakes
It is a good idea to make an advertising sign with some old plywood hammered onto a post. Off-cuts can be got cheaply from skips or friends and neighbours or at the local builders yard. Paint exhibition details on the ply-wood.
I made another sign to say that the exhibition is cancelled due to bad weather....and it is always good practice to make a sign to warn visitors if you have uneven ground for safety reasons.
Cost, nothing. I begged and borrowed.
Bedsheet
You could go that extra step and buy a single bedsheet or use an old one to make a flag. I paid £1.99p on Ebay for a single bed sheet. I then purchased 3 colours of felt squares at £1.99 per bundle of 12 and got myself some dressmakers glue, 4 tubes for £1 at my local discount store. I then cut out the letters I needed for my flag and stuck them on the bed sheet. I was fortunate to already have a flagpole. Flagpoles, the type you see at festivals cost from £8.99p. The bed sheet was cut in half and the two halves, glued together, act as a back and a front of the flag. Glue your felt letters on both sides. Remember to leave an unglued seam so that you can feed the flag pole through the sheet.
Leaflets and Posters
This will be the most expensive part of your Washing Line Exhibition.
If you do not have a computer and a printer you may have to beg, borrow or haggle to get your posters and leaflets printed. The ink can be expensive so ask friends and maybe offer them some money or a favour to print you out the leaflets you need.
Leaflets are the most important in my opinion as these need to posted in your local stores. Some stores charge you money to advertise but it is usually a small amount. Approx 50p-£1.50p.
Leaflets should also be posted to each neighbour in your street. Maybe get your children (accompanied by an adult) or friends to help you out. Free! Or the cost of some candy. Approx £10.00p
Other Advertising
This is all FREE but time consuming.
If you cannnot do this yourself you will need someone to help you who is computer literate and loves to research and surf websites.
RADIO.. your local radio station will usually shout out your event for free but these radio stations also have a website. Take a look, lots of them also have an events page that you can add your exhibition for free.
FreeAds...Your local online newspapers will advertise your exhibition for Free, you may need to register though but that is a pretty quick thing to do and also free.
Social connection websites.....FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace and many more are all available for FREE.
Blogs like Wordpress are FREE or websites like this one, Weebly, are all FREE!
Paint
Well, if you are reading this you will probably already have a mountain of paints. If not, ask your friends and neighbours if they have housepaint they do not want.
Charity shops sometimes have paint and frames.
You need the paint to make your signage.
Fixing spray or varnish
When hanging your precious art outside in the open air you will need to spray your work with a fixing spray or a spray waterproofing system. These can be purchased at any art store, Amazon or Ebay. Cost approx £8.00p a can. Be safe and protect your art!
Insurance
House and home insurance companies often offer a policy where visitors to your property are covered by insurance if they trip or fall. (Hence the warning signs previously mentioned above).
Each country will have different rules on this so please be sure to check this out.
Please your share your insurance and liability advice/ideas on the FaceBook Group link below. To be honest, it would be a good idea to help each other out with this one.
Parasols and Windbreaks
Beg and borrow parasols. They look so colourful and inviting and give your garden that party feel. I have also pegged my art onto parasols. Windbeaks are colourful and can be used to cover up those ugly spaces.
Music
Guess how many of your neighbours are musicians? There has to be at least one! And that one person will know of other musicians. Ask them to come along and play some music for free exposure!
Children
Get the local children involved, they are possibly our future artists and designers! Set up a table for them to make some art. Maybe pebbles that they can paint and take home!
Summary
All in all you are looking at a start up cost of approx £80.00p. Now, this cost can easily be shared with your fellow artists but remember, once the above items have been purchased it will be a long time before you need to spend any more cash to hold your Washing Line Exhibitions.
Of course, it is entirely up to you how much or little you can afford but if you can, offer some free soft drinks, have a bar-b-q, have a raffle or a draw prize for those who come along. Have a donation tin or set up a table and sell brick-a-brack to raise money for art supplies or a charity.
But most of all, run your Washing Line Exhibitions on a regular basis and help other artists get their work out there!

Wear A Peg Wednesday
(Washing Line Pegs)
21 December 2011 All Day!
Created by Well H Teddy
Remember, the idea is we get everyone to wear a peg and be extra polite and helpful to each other for one day.
Hopefully this will influence the grumpy people and demonstrate a better way to co exist.
The event is now in its third year. This is the new group to help plan next years event bigger than ever. (click the FB link below)
In the past people have had great fun decorating their pegs with childrens workshops happening in some cities. Plus mentions on radio and Tv. Its a fun day and hopefully it will grow and have a positive affect on everyone.
'Wear A Peg Wednesday 3' is on Decemer 21st 2011. Spread the word any way you can and invite everyone to the group to help.
Here is the link for more info.....http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=152611598166571

There
will be several Washing Line Exhibitions throughout 2012. The dates,
well, I would be crazy to set any dates as the weather will control my
diary but If any local artists want to exhibit during the upcoming hot,
dry, balmy days of 2012, please feel welcome to contact me.
Anyone else wishing to hold to their own Washing Line Exhibitions this coming summer, no matter where you live, please send me your photos so that I can add them to the Washing Line Exhibition website :)
