'Ballet Class'....How it happened!
I was reading a poem on FaceBook and enjoyed it so much that I had to paint my version of that poem, Dorothy's Dance Class. I emailed my painting to Sullivan The Poet and was thrilled to find out that Sullivan loved my painting. We are now collaborating on new work for his forthcoming children's works. Updates to follow.

Written by Plymouth Poet Laureate, Michael Sullivan
"And here's another artist - Sandy Wager, one of the South West's leading naivists - who was sufficiently amused by my piece for children 'Dorothy's Dance Class..' that she immortalized it in oils"...
‘Dorothy’s Dance Class..’
Old ‘Potty Dotty’ to her girls,
had one green eye and flame red curls;
The other was of sapphire blue,
a fine but wholly different hue;
For it was made of glass you know,
and squeaked when swivelled to and fro;
Or traversed slower than its mate,
to rest its gaze a trifle late.
A bamboo pole from far Shanghai,
hung loose on brackets four foot high;
And spanned the room from loo to hall,
along a wholly mirrored wall;
Where tap and ballet, modern too,
were pranced and twirled til toes turned blue;
Each jetté, plié, pirouette,
to Dotty’s wheezy old cassette.
But this was Potty Dotty’s world,
where in her mind a stage unfurled;
With lavish sets and twinkling lights,
and Nur’yev in his rudest tights;
Where dancers spun on perfect point,
with not a one rheumatic joint;
Frail dying swans flapped broken wings,
in front of rapt’rous Queens and Kings.
But real life can be so unkind,
for there, outside Dot’s fevered mind;
Against the barre her motley troupe,
with crisps and cups of oxtail soup;
All poke out ribs and saggy tums,
or cranky feet and odd shaped bums;
Reflected in the mirrored wall,
in leotards one size too small.
But at a clap and one small squeak,
while Dot’s odd eye caught up a peek;
In wobbly lines their toes apoint,
and pulling taut each wayward joint;
They as a one struck up their pose,
with nice straight backs and crimpy toes;
Then to the strains of old ‘Tchaicoff’,
on Dot’s command they all set off.
Grand jettés soared as graceful leaps,
then crashed in wriggling, giggling heaps;
Whilst pirouettes made Phoebe sick,
or Zoe’s contact lens unstick;
Hermione danced with two left feet,
Pru couldn’t get her knees to meet;
While Portia had to play the clown,
and pliés made Lil’s tights fall down.
With chorus lines like rugby rucks,
frail graceful swans like dying ducks;
They thundered wildly fro and to,
all pretty much without a clue;
They danced on one another’s feet,
or kicked each other in the seat;
Til Tabatha burst into tears,
to scornful floods of boos and jeers.
Flo’s ballet pump, one size too loose,
flew off into the grapefruit juice;
Which set the jug to roll and rock,
and Flo all hops in just a sock;
Then Abigail just HAD to poo,
which sparked a stampede for the loo;
To leave poor Dot an empty hall,
and grapefruit juice all down the wall.
A silken purse ‘twas all too clear,
she’d never stitch from this pig’s ear;
No prima ballerinas lurked,
however long or hard she worked;
They flopped and flapped and paddled each,
like seals upon a floorboard beach;
Within that mirror sequinned hall,
but ‘Potty Dotty’ loved them all!
